“Our traditional 1930s three bed semi had an existing standard flat roof type extension. We had a vision of a larger, pitched roof extension which would extend sideways beyond the existing building. This would create a larger dining area, leading through an arch to an extended kitchen, then through a door to a toilet and utility area. The link from the existing lounge would also have an arched entrance.

Having visited Americas Deep South we really loved the idea of an American style porch where we could enjoy a British summer even if it rained! Aside from removal of the existing extension, we also needed a large garage to be demolished and replaced with a new terrace to lead off the porch.

Any major building works are usually stressful and intrusive. However, Artisan made the whole process as painless as possible from initial drawings through planning permission stage and construction. From our first meeting with Nick Hillman and his architect, we knew we were working with professionals whose attention to detail and caring manner were obvious. They are ‘no problem’ people who embraced our somewhat offbeat idea of the American porch with enthusiasm. Nick’s project management skills are first class, explaining each step in advance and bringing the work in on agreed budget and virtually on time, despite snow and freezing weather conditions.

He also has first class people to call upon and specialists for carpentry, roofing, electrics and plumbing. Artisan transformed our house and turned our ideas into reality and we have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them. We just need a banjo player for the American porch – not even Artisan could manage that!”
